Kenya: Elephants, Jade Lakes & Beaches That Ruin Normal Life
Flexible dates · 7 days
Kenya in February is basically a wildlife documentary that forgot to stop filming. This itinerary jumps from elephant-packed savannahs and the wild rivers of Meru and Samburu to the surreal shores of Lake Turkana, where volcanic islands rise from water so blue it looks mildly suspicious. Then, because apparently Kenya felt that wasn’t enough, there are dhows, mangroves, Swahili ruins and absurdly good beaches waiting along the coast. Expect red-dust elephants, crater lakes, desert horizons, crocodiles, giraffes, dhow sunsets, mangrove kayaking and more dramatic landscapes than your phone storage was emotionally prepared for. February brings dry-season wildlife viewing and excellent beach weather, but the north is hot, remote and wonderfully unforgiving. Start early, carry water, use a proper 4x4 where needed and accept that at some point an elephant will completely ruin your schedule. In the best possible way.
February notes and practical tips
- Dry season sweet spot: clear skies, crisp wildlife viewing in the parks, and bright beach days along the coast. Expect sun, dust inland, and breezy afternoons by big lakes and the ocean.
- Wildlife wins: grass is short and animals cluster near waterholes—great for Meru, Samburu, Tsavo, and Kora safaris.
- Coast conditions: generally calm mornings and steady Kaskazi trade winds—perfect for kayaking early, kitesurfing by midday, and sunset dhow cruises.
- Turkana tactics: it’s hot and windy; plan dawn and late-afternoon activities, hydrate, and carry sun protection.
- Road reality: tracks in the north can be corrugated—4x4 recommended, plus extra water and fuel. Carry some cash; card acceptance can be patchy in small towns.
- Daylight: roughly 12 hours of sun; start early for wildlife and siesta at noon heat, then enjoy golden-hour walks and boat rides.
Meru’s Wild Rivers and Waterfalls
A lush, sun-glossed savannah where elephants sneak in for a drink and the Tana River practices its dramatic selfies. Expect bright mornings, big skies, and the soundtrack of water over rock.
